About This Wine
“The 2018 Opus One is a tremendous example of why Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux grape varieties flourish along Highway 29.” Those are the opening words from wine critic Wilfred Wong’s review of this California cult cab. He’s not wrong. For decades, Opus One has set the standard for excellence by which other American wines are measured.
Opus One was founded in 1979 as a partnership between Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, head of Château Mouton Rothschild. The two married Old World winemaking traditions with New World sensibilities, creating a new breed of luxury wines. Today, Mondavi and Rothschild’s legacies remain with their facial profiles visible on the Opus One label.
The Final Sip: Anyone in search of great Opus One vintages will have a hard time bettering 2018. Only two previous vintages have scored higher (1980 and 2013.)
